Trip to Ft. Davis and Big Bend National Park

Since my Dad was the County Clerk and I grew up in the Fannin County Courthouse, I have a bit of a fascination with County Courthouses. This picture of Janet Jones, Pat, and me was taken outside of the Courthouse in Fort Davis. The Courthouse is a beautiful, well preserved building.

We spent Friday night in the historic Limpia Hotel which was built in the 1930s.  It was very quaint and comfortable.

One of the officers' quarters in the restored Fort Davis. Notice the mountains behind the building.

More Fort Davis scenery.
After staying in Fort Davis and enjoying the star party at the McDonald Observatory we moved on to Marfa the next day.

The Hotel Paisano in Marfa is known for being home to Elizabeth Taylor and other stars during the filming of the movie Giant.
Just some of the scenery we enjoyed driving from Presido to Lajitas.

Sunset at the house in Lajitas.

The view from our house.

At the stables getting ready for our ride into the mountains. You will notice that Janet and I opted for helmets rather than the traditional cowboy hat. Wish I had pictures from the ride but we were all too busy hanging on. The ride was all up and down the sides of canyons and mountains. The scenery was beautiful and a little scary at times, but what great views we had and the horses were amazingly steady. One of my favorite activities of the trip. We spent the morning riding in the mountains and the afternoon rafting down the Rio Grand River. No pictures from that either.
Santa Elena Canyon way off in the distance from 14 miles away on the Ross Maxwell scenic drive.
Santa Elena Canyon from much closer.
The Rio Grande River coming out of the Santa Elena Canyon.

The next three pictures were taken at the bottom of the canyon.

Fellow travelers back row Bill Buck, Dwyat Bell, & Jim Jones.
Middle row Pat Warren, Janet Jones, Ginger Bell and front row Debbie Buck and Lou Ann Warren. What a fun group to travel with.
The famous Starlight Theatre Bar and Grill in Terlingua ghost town.

The cemetery in Terlingua ghost town.

More scenery.

Sitting around a campfire the last night of the trip was the perfect ending to a fabulous trip. We enjoyed a beautiful sunset, a blazing fire and ended with looking up at the millions of stars in the black sky overhead. You really can see so many more stars out there than we ever imagine underneath our city lights.

I decided to post pictures from our trip even though we didn't take the camper. There were four couples so it would have been a little cozy! We rented a four bedroom house in Lajitas instead. I highly recommend a trip to Big Bend. The scenery is unlike anything I have seen in Texas. Til next time.
